Frequently asked questions.

For Student Volunteers

What is this intiative?

We are students who want to help health care workers in our community with temporary urgent household needs while they perform essential duties during COVID-19.

Who is organizing this effort?

We are a group of medical students from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School looking for ways to help our community.

Who are the “babysitters”?

Our babysitters are comprised of a diverse array of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences students. Please note that we are NOT certified childcare professionals. Every babysitter is certified in CPR, BLS, and up to date with all vaccinations.

What ages do you babysit? What kind of services can the students provide?

Currently, we are offering services for children of all ages. However, because our students are not trained in childcare or managing disabilities, we are unable to provide services for children with complex developmental needs. If you would like to clarify if your child fits into this category, please don't hesitate to reach out to our coordinators at NJMScovidteam@gmail.com. Apart from childcare services, students can provide grocery shopping, meal prepping, and pharmacy runs, provided you give them authorization. We would prefer if you did not utilize our students for alcohol-related purchases.

How much does this cost?

Payment is not required. As fellow Americans and future health care providers, we feel that it is our obligation to lend a helping hand to the hardworking men and women who are on the frontlines of this pandemic. Our students are made aware that this is a voluntary service on their behalf. However, you are free to arrange compensation arrangements privately with your student if you feel the need to do so. We do not accept IOU's.

How long can I receive childcare?

Currently, we ask that you reevaluate your needs weekly. Our students are still expected to meet their individual educational requirements and may need to do so during their voluntary babysitting hours. If you find yourself needing more assistance than your assigned student volunteer is able to provide, please reach out to NJMScovidteam@gmail.com.

Can we combine children from different households?

Unfortunately, due to health and legal concerns, we can only accommodate children from the same household (i.e. siblings, live-in relatives).

Will I be monetarily compensated for my time?

No, this program is voluntary to provide services to those on the front lines of healthcare in the setting of COVID-19.

What if I get paired with a family and their requests are outside of my comfort zone?

As in any professional situation, we always recommend that you communicate this discomfort with the family in a timely manner. Please reach out to your student coordinators at NJMScovidteam@gmail.com and we will work with you and the family to resolve any issues.

What will the pairings look like?

As we expect the time and needs of families to be larger than any individual student may be able to manage on their own, we plan to create pairings of 2 students who will work together to fill the scheduling needs for each healthcare workers’ family. After the intake forms are completed, we create these pairings based on matching characteristics and locations and we will send an introduction email to the family and students. It will then be the responsibility of the family to let the students know their time requirements.

What is the time commitment needed?

Any time you are able to contribute is incredibly appreciated. There is no minimum or maximum time limit for volunteering. With this being said, please remember to take care of yourself during this time!

Where do I record my volunteer hours?

Please complete the volunteer tracking form after each shift. Then, go take care of yourself and relax! You’ve earned it!
